Is It Safe to Connect ChatGPT to Your Bank Account?

Connecting ChatGPT to a bank is safer through OpenAI's own Finances connection than pasting a password into the chat. Uploading a statement is a third choice, and it is the one that can put the full account number in the conversation. Finances, on the help page read November 3, 2026, is a U.S. feature for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro on web, iOS, and Android, and ChatGPT cannot move money, pay bills, or file taxes there.

On a personal plan an uploaded file can also be used to train models unless you turn that off. The steps below are the handoff: no bank password in the message, redact before you attach a file, and use a read-only ledger when ChatGPT, Claude, or Cursor should see the same accounts next month.

Three ways ChatGPT can see a bank

"Connect my bank to ChatGPT" covers three different acts. A password in the chat is the one to refuse. Finances is OpenAI's own connection. An upload is a file you chose, frozen on the day you downloaded it.

Finances can also connect a credit report through Experian. That link is separate from the bank connection. You can use either, or both. Do not paste the bank password into the chat

To the bank, whoever types the password is you. An assistant that signs in with it is not a limited guest. There is no screen that says the model could only read. There is a login. Refuse a request to paste the username and password, to read out a one-time code, or to leave a browser signed in so the assistant can click around.

If you already did it, change the password from a device you control, sign out other sessions on the bank's own security page, and delete the chat. A deleted chat does not unwind a login that already happened.

If you use ChatGPT Finances

These steps are OpenAI's, from the Finances help page read November 3, 2026. The sign-in happens in the connection, not in the message.

Open Finances and select Get started, or type @Finances, connect my accounts.
Sign in to the institutions you want inside that connection. Do not type the password into the chat.
Return to ChatGPT. Sync usually takes a few minutes. OpenAI says rare cases take several hours.
Ask from the Finances page, or type /finances or @finances in a normal chat.
Disconnect in Settings when you are done. One account can come off from the Accounts tab on the Finances page.

OpenAI's help says ChatGPT cannot move money, pay bills, change account settings, make trades, change retirement contributions, open or close accounts, or file taxes. The personal-finance post says ChatGPT cannot see full account numbers. The institution still decides which history arrives. Some accounts share a balance and not the transactions. A missing month is a missing feed, not a quiet month.

Disconnecting removes the connected data from ChatGPT. Synced account data is deleted from OpenAI's systems within 30 days. Chats and financial memories stay until you delete them. On personal Free, Plus, or Pro, Improve the model for everyone is on by default. Turn it off under Settings, then Data controls. History stays, and the switch does not delete chats. A Go plan can use Finances. That page does not state Go's training default, so this guide does not invent one. Temporary chats do not open connected accounts and are not used to improve models. OpenAI says they may be kept up to 30 days for safety. The Finances help lists web, iOS, and Android. A desktop app on that page: Not documented.

Upload a bank or credit card statement

OpenAI's upload help, read November 3, 2026, lists PDF, DOCX, TXT, CSV, XLSX, and XLS. A bank or card statement is almost always a PDF or a CSV. Download it yourself. Do not hand over the login so the assistant can fetch it.

Download it on a device you control. Prefer the bank's CSV or PDF. A photo often keeps the account number in the corner, and a digit is easier to misread.
Redact, then attach. Finances is the path where OpenAI says full account numbers stay out. An upload includes every field you left in.
Name the job. "Total the debits. Ignore transfers between my accounts. List merchants over $50."
Set training before the upload. On personal Free, Plus, or Pro, Improve the model for everyone is on until you turn it off. Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces are not used to train models by default. A work login is still your employer's account. A personal statement belongs on a personal login.
Delete both copies. Deleting the chat does not delete a file saved in Library or Space. Delete that copy too. Free accounts get 3 file uploads a day. That cap is not a privacy control.

Ask ChatGPT to analyze a statement

The statement already prints a total. Ask for that total first. If the sum does not match, the categories under it are not a budget. Ask which rows were counted. A transfer to savings, a card payment on top of the purchases, a refund, and a pending charge next to the posted one are the usual misses. OpenAI's Finances help names that same failure on a live connection, and it says AI can make mistakes. An upload cannot see a charge that posted later. Two months means two files. Finances can answer without a file, and the dashboard shows a last sync time. A stale sync is not this morning's balance.

Tax documents

A W-2, a 1099, and a full return carry a Social Security number, an employer, an address, and often an account number. Take the Social Security number and the account numbers off before the file touches the chat. If the question is what a line means, upload a blank form and type only the line you are asking about.

OpenAI says ChatGPT can organize tax information, explain a concept, and point at items to review, such as a deduction or an estimated payment. It does not file your taxes, and it is not a tax preparer. A highlighted number is a reason to look at the form again. Use a temporary chat, do not save it, then delete the chat and the file in Library or Space.

Checklist before you connect or upload

The bank password is not in the message, and neither is a one-time code.
A connection used Finances, and you know Settings is where you disconnect it.
An upload has account numbers, routing numbers, full card numbers, and Social Security numbers already blacked out.
On personal Free, Plus, or Pro, Improve the model for everyone is off before the file goes up, unless you mean to leave it on.
A one-time read uses a temporary chat, and you do not save it.
The assistant's total matches the statement's own total before you trust a category.
You delete the chat and the Library or Space copy when the question is answered.
You do not treat the answer as a filed return or as a balance the bank would confirm.

Can I upload a credit card statement to ChatGPT?

Yes, the same way as a bank statement. Take out the full card number, the expiration date, and any CVV before you upload. The last four digits are enough to tell two cards apart. Then ask for merchants, dates, and amounts. Check the assistant's total against the statement's own total. A payment to the card is not new spending, and a pending charge that later posts can be counted twice. OpenAI's Finances help says transfers, card payments, reimbursements, and duplicate pending transactions can be counted as spending, and that AI can make mistakes. The file does not refresh next month.

Can ChatGPT analyze my bank statements?

It can total a file, group merchants, and compare months you uploaded. It cannot see a charge that is not in the file. Match ChatGPT's sum to the statement's own total before you trust a category. Ask which rows it counted. Transfers between your accounts, a credit card payment, and a refund are the usual rows that get counted as spending. A CSV from the bank is cleaner than a photo. Finances can analyze connected accounts without an upload, and that connection syncs. An uploaded file is stale the day you download it. Neither path moves money.

Can I upload tax documents to ChatGPT?
