ChatGPT Finances: Free, and How to Fix It

Checked . ChatGPT Finances claims are from the Finances help article and the personal-finance post (May 15, 2026, with the June 25 and October 2 updates). Lockdown Mode is from the Lockdown Mode help. FYN claims are from the MCP reference, pricing, and agents pages. If a page did not say it, it is not here.

Short answer. Finances is free for eligible users in the U.S. on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro, on web, iOS, and Android. The Finances help article says that, and it does not list a separate price. The October 2, 2026 update says Finances is rolling out to Free and Go users in the U.S. The June 25, 2026 update on the same post says it was already available to Plus and Pro users in the U.S. on web, iOS, and Android. ChatGPT cannot move money, pay bills, or make trades.

This page answers whether Finances is free, and what to do when a connection stops. What Finances includes next to a ledger is on FYN vs ChatGPT Finances. Uploads, training, and a password pasted into the chat are in is it safe to connect ChatGPT to your bank.

How to open Finances and connect accounts

The help article says to open Finances and select Get started. The personal-finance post says to open Finances from the sidebar. You can also type @Finances, connect my accounts in any conversation.

  1. Open Finances in ChatGPT and select Get started.
  2. Select Connect with Plaid.
  3. Sign in and select the financial institutions you want to connect.
  4. Return to ChatGPT to start using Finances.

Finances in ChatGPT uses Plaid to connect supported financial accounts. Plaid builds and maintains connections to more than 12,000 financial institutions. You choose which accounts to connect. After you authenticate, ChatGPT begins syncing and categorizing. That usually takes a few minutes. In rare cases it may take several hours.

A bank connection does not connect a credit report. Credit is a separate Experian connection. The help article says you can use either or both, and that connecting accounts through Plaid does not connect your credit.

Ask from the Finances page, or type /finances or @finances in the chat box. The Finances page shows when accounts last synced and whether any account needs attention.

When the connection stops

These are the cases the Finances help and the Lockdown Mode help describe. The help article also says a connection can fail because the login is wrong, the account is locked, the institution is temporarily unavailable, or the institution needs a security step. Sign in at the institution first, then try again in Finances.

ChatGPT Finances problems OpenAI documents, and the fix each help page gives.
What you seeWhat OpenAI saysWhat to do
Finances is missingAvailable in the U.S. to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro on web, iOS, and Android. Free and Go are rolling out as of the October 2, 2026 update. The help article does not mention a desktop app. On personal accounts and self-serve ChatGPT Business accounts, Finances is unavailable in Lockdown Mode.Confirm the country and the plan. Open Finances from the sidebar, or select Get started, or type @Finances, connect my accounts. If Lockdown Mode is on, use the Lockdown row below.
Action requiredThe institution needs a step before the account can connect or refresh. That can be a multi-factor code, a security question, updated terms, a password reset, contact information, an unlock, or third-party data sharing.Sign in at the institution, finish the prompt, then return to ChatGPT and try again.
Invalid credentials, or the username changedThe login may be wrong. Plaid may treat the username and password as case-sensitive even when the institution does not. A username change is not an edit on the old connection.Sign in at the institution. Connect again through Plaid without autofill or a password manager. Check capitalization, typos, and extra spaces. If the username changed, remove the connection and connect again.
Sync is slow, or the institution is downSync usually takes a few minutes, and in rare cases several hours. A temporary outage does not always mean the login is wrong. A connected account can keep showing the last successful sync.Wait, then refresh. Check the last sync time on the Finances page. If the institution was temporarily unavailable, try again later.
A temporary chat ignores the accountsA temporary chat does not access connected financial accounts, and it does not use or create memories. It does not appear in history.Ask in a regular chat, from the Finances page, or with /finances or @finances.
Lockdown Mode is onFor personal accounts and self-serve ChatGPT Business accounts, Finances is unavailable in Lockdown Mode. On a managed workspace, apps follow workspace settings, and Lockdown Mode does not automatically disable every app.On the web, select the LOCKDOWN MODE label in the composer, then Turn off for this chat. Or open Settings, then Security. On a managed workspace, an admin checks the member's role and app settings.

Remove one account from the Accounts tab on the Finances page, or disconnect Plaid under Settings, then Apps, then Finances. The same screens are where a changed username gets a new connection.

If the institution is not in the list, the help article gives three reasons. Plaid does not support it yet, it does not share the data Finances needs, or Plaid cannot reliably connect to it right now. Check another name for the same institution. An account can also connect and still leave out transactions, holdings, or loan fields. ChatGPT can only show what the institution provides.

What ChatGPT cannot do

The help article says ChatGPT can help you understand, plan, and evaluate financial decisions, and that it cannot take financial actions for you. It cannot:

  • Move money
  • Pay bills
  • Change account settings
  • Make trades
  • Change retirement contributions
  • Open or close financial accounts
  • File taxes
  • Act as your financial, legal, tax, or investment adviser

The personal-finance post says ChatGPT cannot see full account numbers or make any changes to your accounts. The help article says ChatGPT is not a fiduciary, registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, tax preparer, or law firm, and that responses are for informational and planning purposes. It does not file your taxes.

Where FYN fits

Use Finances for the view ChatGPT keeps inside ChatGPT. Add FYN when you want receipt line items, the budget FYN keeps, Agent Activity, and the same memory in Claude and Cursor. Finances is OpenAI's connection. FYN is a separate read-only server. Connecting one does not connect the other. The clicks for the server are in connect your money to ChatGPT.

FYN publishes a read-only personal finance MCP server at https://mcp.fyn.fyi. Registry name fyi.fyn/finance. The only scope is fyn.read. The reference lists the tools. They read the FYN ledger. They do not move money.

Link each bank once, on Pro, up to 15 accounts. Agents connect to FYN, never to your bank, and they do not receive a bank password. Agent Activity shows every time an agent reads your data, kept for 90 days. Disconnect anytime, from Agent Activity or from Settings, then Agent access.

In ChatGPT, open chatgpt.com/plugins, add a custom MCP server, and paste https://mcp.fyn.fyi. The same URL serves Claude and Cursor. ChatGPT, Claude, and Cursor are also on fyn.fyi/agents.

If you do not want a bank link, the free plan still pulls receipts from email and picks up Apple Pay and Google Wallet purchases, including on-device taps. A free account does not sync a bank. Pro adds the bank link.

Start free. The free plan does not expire and does not ask for a card. It includes the connection, at 500 tool calls a day. Pro is $9.99 a month, with the bank link and 10,000 tool calls a day.
