ChatGPT Budget Prompts That Stay Current

Checked . The install steps are from OpenAI's help on connecting app accounts. FYN claims are from the MCP reference, pricing, and agents pages. If a page did not say it, it is not here.

Short answer. The best ChatGPT prompts for budgeting are the seven below: a monthly budget, where the money went, subscriptions to cancel, bills, a savings goal, a household budget, and a net worth check-in. Copy one and paste your numbers. Leave a line blank when you do not know it. That is how to use ChatGPT to make a budget from your own figures. Those figures go stale. The same job stays current when ChatGPT can read FYN.

Leave the bank password and full account numbers out of the paste. What a password in the chat, or a statement upload, hands over is in is it safe to connect ChatGPT to your bank. ChatGPT Finances is OpenAI's connection inside ChatGPT. FYN is a separate read-only server. Connecting one does not connect the other. If Finances will not open, start with ChatGPT Finances: free, and how to fix it. A side-by-side is on FYN vs ChatGPT Finances.

The prompts

Each block is the whole message. Copy it, fill the blanks, and send it. A blank stays blank. The first lines tell ChatGPT not to invent that number.

Build a monthly budget

Build this month's budget from the numbers below. Use take-home pay, not gross.

Separate needs (housing, utilities, insurance, minimum debt, childcare), groceries, dining, and savings. Put the due date on each bill. Name the savings goal.
Divide what is left by the days left in this month.
If a line is blank, say it is missing. Do not invent a figure.
Name three cuts that do not touch housing or a minimum debt payment.

Groceries:
Dining:
Savings or extra debt:

Find where the money went

Tell me where this money went. Use only the lines I paste.

Group spending into needs, wants, and savings or debt.
Name the top five categories by dollars, and each share of the total.
Name any merchant or category that appears three or more times.
Compare spending with the income below and state the gap in dollars.
If a line is a transfer between my own accounts, leave it out of spending.
Do not invent a charge.

Income:
Spending:

Cancel subscriptions

These charges look recurring. Help me decide what to cancel. Use only this list.

For each: name, amount, how often, and a yearly total.
Mark each keep, cancel, or ask me. Ask me when you cannot tell if I use it.
Add the yearly dollars on the cancel lines.
Draft a one-sentence note I can send for each cancel line. Do not contact anyone.
Do not guess a price that is not on the list.

Charges:

Plan for bills

Build a bill calendar for the next 30 days from this list.

Sort by due date.
Sum the next 7 days, and the next 30.
Subtract the 7-day total from the checking balance and say what is left.
If two bills land in the same week, say so.
If a due date is missing, say so. Do not invent one.
Do not move money. This is a plan.

Savings goals

Turn this savings goal into a monthly number. Do not assume interest.

State the goal, the target, and the date.
Count the months left, including this month. Subtract what I already saved.
Monthly amount is the remainder divided by those months.
If that is more than the spare cash below, show a later date that fits the spare cash.
Do not invent income.

Goal:
Already saved:
Spare cash each month:

A household budget

Build one household budget from two people. Keep each person's income visible.

Combined take-home pay.
Shared bills, and who pays each one today.
Show an income-share split and a 50/50 split. We will pick.
Keep personal spending with that person.
One joint savings line.
List any number only one of us filled in. Do not invent the other.

Person A income and personal spending:
Person B income and personal spending:
Shared bills:
Joint savings target:

Net worth check-in

Do a net worth check-in from these balances. Net worth is assets minus liabilities.

Group cash, investments, and debts. Show the arithmetic.
A credit card balance is a debt, not an asset.
A transfer between my own accounts does not change the total.
If I included last month, show the change in dollars.
If a balance is missing, leave that account out of the total.
Do not estimate a home, a car, or growth.

Last month, if I have it:

Pasted numbers go stale

A paste is whatever you typed. The next paycheck, the bill that posts, and the grocery trip are not in the message until you type them. An uploaded statement is frozen on the day you saved it. Next month you transcribe again, or you ask about a month that is already over. If the message does not contain the figure, and no connected ledger contains it, a fluent answer is a guess. The line that says not to invent a figure is there so a blank stays a blank.

The same prompts with FYN connected

Drop the blanks. Ask the same job, and tell ChatGPT to use FYN. You link each bank once, on Pro, up to 15 accounts. ChatGPT, Claude, and other agents plug into FYN, never to your bank, and they do not receive a bank password. Sign-in is OAuth. The only scope is fyn.read. The tools read the FYN ledger. They cannot move money. Agent Activity shows every time an agent reads your data, kept for 90 days. Disconnect anytime, from Agent Activity or from Settings, then Agent access. The same account answers in Claude and Cursor. Those clients are on fyn.fyi/agents.

If you skip the bank link, FYN still pulls receipts from email and logs Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet taps as you pay. A free account does not sync a bank. Prompts that need balances, bills from the bank, or net worth need that link, or numbers you paste. Receipt and tap questions can run without it. A wallet tap is in the record as you pay. A card charge can still wait to post.

Monthly budget, from the ledger

Use my FYN data. Build this month's budget from take-home pay, bills still due, and spending so far. Keep groceries and dining separate from other needs. Put savings on its own line. Say what is left and how many days are left. If a figure is missing, say so. Do not invent a number. Do not move money.

Where the money went, from the ledger

Use my FYN data. Where did my money go last month? Group needs, wants, and savings or debt. Name the top five categories by dollars and their share of spending. Leave transfers between my own accounts out. If a category cannot be verified, say so. Do not invent charges.

Subscriptions, from the ledger

Use my FYN data. List active recurring charges with amount, how often, and a yearly total. Mark each keep, cancel, or ask me. Add the yearly amount on the cancel lines. Draft a one-sentence note for each. Do not contact anyone. Do not guess a price that is not in the ledger.

Bills, from the ledger

Use my FYN data. Which bills are due in the next 30 days? Sort by date. Sum the next 7 days and the next 30. Subtract the 7-day total from checking and say what is left. If a date is missing, say so. Do not move money.

A savings goal, from the ledger

Use my FYN data. I want to save [amount] for [goal] by [date]. Subtract what I already have. Give the monthly amount with no interest assumed. If that is more than the cash left after bills, show a later date that fits. Do not invent income.

The household, from the ledger

Use my FYN data for this household. Build one budget from combined income, shared bills due, and spending so far. Keep a joint savings line. Where the ledger does not say which person a cost belongs to, ask instead of guessing.

Net worth, from the ledger

Use my FYN data. What is my net worth today, assets minus liabilities? Group cash, investments, and debts. Show the change over the last 30 days if that history is there. A credit card balance is a debt. Do not estimate a home, a car, or growth that is not in the ledger.

Add the FYN plugin in ChatGPT

Open the FYN plugin in ChatGPT. OpenAI's help, read , says an app has to be available for your plan, region, account, surface, and workspace. In a managed workspace, an admin may also need to enable it. The help describes the connection like this:

  1. Open Settings, then Plugins, and select FYN.
  2. Select Install plugin if that button is shown. That can start the connection.
  3. If ChatGPT asks, select Connect. Sign in to FYN, review the read-only permission, and select Allow.
  4. In a chat, type @ and pick FYN, or open + and select it. Paste a prompt from this page and say to use FYN.

Adding FYN by server URL is the same ledger, at https://mcp.fyn.fyi. Registry name fyi.fyn/finance. Those clicks are in connect your money to ChatGPT.

Start free. The free plan does not expire and does not ask for a card. It includes the connection, at 500 tool calls a day. Pro is $9.99 a month, with the bank link, up to 15 accounts, and 10,000 tool calls a day. Then add the FYN plugin and ask the same question next month without retyping the month.

FAQ

What are the best ChatGPT prompts for budgeting?

The useful ones name the job, tell ChatGPT not to invent a missing number, and separate needs, wants, and savings. This page has seven: a monthly budget, where the money went, subscriptions, bills for the next 30 days, a savings goal, a household budget, and a net worth check-in. Paste your figures, or connect FYN and ask ChatGPT to read the ledger. A prompt that asks for a typical budget answers about a typical household, not yours.

How do I use ChatGPT to make a budget?

Paste take-home pay, bills with due dates, groceries, dining, and the savings or debt you want funded. Ask for the flexible amount left for the days remaining, and for any blank line to stay blank. The monthly-budget prompt on this page is that request. It is a plan. It does not pay a bill. The same job, with the blanks removed, is the version to use once FYN is connected.

Why do ChatGPT budget prompts go stale?

The numbers in the message are a snapshot. The next paycheck, bill, or grocery trip is not in that paste until you type it again. A file you upload has the same limit. It is frozen on the day you saved it. The wording of the prompt can stay. The figures cannot, unless ChatGPT can read a ledger that updates. FYN is that ledger. You link a bank once in FYN, and ChatGPT reads FYN.

Can ChatGPT move money if I connect FYN?

No. FYN tools are read-only. The only scope is fyn.read. They do not move money or pay a bill. You link each bank once in FYN, on Pro, up to 15 accounts. ChatGPT and other agents connect to FYN, not to the bank, and they do not receive a bank password. Agent Activity shows every time an agent reads your data, kept for 90 days. Disconnect anytime, from Agent Activity or from Settings, then Agent access.

Can I use these prompts if I do not link a bank?

Yes. Paste the numbers yourself. If you use FYN and skip the bank link, the free plan still pulls receipts from email and logs Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet taps as you pay. A free account does not sync a bank. Prompts that need balances, bills from the bank, or net worth need the bank link on Pro, or numbers you paste. Receipt and tap questions can run on the free plan.
