The 7 Best YNAB Alternatives in 2026 (Compared)
YNAB (You Need A Budget) is a zero-based budgeting app. You give every dollar a job before you spend it. Targets and Auto-Assign, including Average Spent, fund the plan. YNAB Together puts up to six people on one subscription, each with a login. It runs on iPhone, Android, web and Apple Watch, and Direct Import works in North America and 18 European countries. People who stick with the method are devoted to it. Plenty of others go looking for a YNAB alternative.
The reasons are usually the upkeep and the price. YNAB categorizes by payee and you approve each transaction. There is no free plan, only a 34-day trial with no card, and a free year for college students. After that it is $14.99 a month or $109 a year. If you want to keep assigning dollars, read Goodbudget and EveryDollar. If you are tired of the session, read FYN, Monarch, Copilot, PocketGuard and Simplifi.
Full disclosure: we build FYN, one of the apps on this list. If the zero-based method is what you love about YNAB, we will point you at the apps that do it, which are not FYN. Every competitor fact here comes from that company's own pages. For the side-by-side, see FYN vs YNAB. The wider field is in our best budget apps in 2026 comparison.
1. FYN: for people who want the categorizing done for them
FYN is our product. Free is $0. It does not expire and does not ask for a card. Receipt photos and emailed receipts are one monthly count, 20 a month on Free and 200 a month on Pro. Apple Pay and Google Wallet purchases are logged as you pay, on Free and on Pro. Ask FYN is 20 questions a month on Free and 500 on Pro. A read-only connector lets assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT read FYN data. YNAB's ChatGPT app can't see your plan.
Pro is $9.99 a month. Bank sync is Pro only, via Plaid, for up to 15 accounts. A free account does not sync a bank. Price history from your receipts is on Pro. The pricing page lists an autopilot budget on Free and Pro, and 1 household member on Free with unlimited household members on Pro. Everyone shares the plan's limits.
Pricing: Free $0, Pro $9.99 a month. See pricing. Runs on iPhone, Android and web. A zero-based, give-every-dollar-a-job workflow: Not documented on the pricing page.
2. Monarch Money: a household dashboard instead of envelopes
Monarch fills your budget from a six-month average, scans receipts with line items, and accepts receipt email. Household members are free, each with their own login and role. It connects through Plaid, MX and Finicity, and it runs on iPhone, Android and the web. Forecasting and investment analysis come with Monarch Plus.
Pricing: Core is $14.99/month or $99.99/year after a 7-day trial; Plus is $199.99/year. No free plan. Honest limitation: you trade YNAB's method for a dashboard. The annual Core price is $99.99, against YNAB's $109, and the trial is 7 days, not 34. See FYN vs Monarch Money.
3. Goodbudget: envelope budgeting with a real free plan
Goodbudget is the closest free cousin of YNAB's method. You set money aside for each envelope before you spend it, then log or confirm each spend. The Free Forever plan includes 10 regular envelopes and 10 more, one account and two devices. One budget syncs across phones and the web, so you and a partner see each spend. It has debt tracking on both plans, and manual import of QFX, OFX and CSV bank files.
Pricing: free plan; Premium is $10/month or $80/year. Premium imports pending transactions and learns which envelope each store usually goes in. Honest limitation: automatic bank sync is Premium only, works with US banks only, and doesn't cover investment, crypto or loan accounts. Synced transactions get a suggested envelope that you confirm. See FYN vs Goodbudget.
4. EveryDollar: zero-based budgeting with a free manual plan
EveryDollar is Ramsey Solutions' zero-based app: give every dollar a job, with a free plan that includes unlimited budget categories, split transactions and sinking funds, and no time limit. Premium adds bank connections at more than 13,000 banks and credit unions. Even on Premium you pick the budget item for each imported transaction.
Pricing: free manual plan; Premium is $17.99/month or $79.99/year. Honest limitation: bank connection is Premium only, the mobile app and Premium are US only, and you still assign each transaction. See FYN vs EveryDollar.
5. Copilot Money: automatic categorizing, Apple first
Copilot has polished iPhone, iPad, Mac and web apps, AI categorization, and budget Rebalance suggestions. Alerts cover low balances, big expenses and card utilization, with a Monday recap. On Apple devices it itemizes Amazon orders.
Pricing: $13/month or $95/year after a one-month trial. No free plan. Honest limitation: there is no Android app, which YNAB has. See FYN vs Copilot.
6. PocketGuard: zero-based is one of several budget styles
PocketGuard's Leftover is a near real-time figure for what is safe to spend after bills and goals. It categorizes automatically and supports zero-based, envelope, 50/30/20 and custom budgets with rollovers, plus a debt payoff planner with avalanche and snowball. Plus connects unlimited bank accounts through Plaid and Finicity. It runs on web, iPhone, Apple Watch and Android.
Pricing: $12.99/month, $74.99/year or $149.99 lifetime, after a 7-day trial. No free plan. Honest limitation: bill lowering runs through partner Billshark, which PocketGuard says keeps roughly 40% of the first year's savings. It is not YNAB's give-every-dollar-a-job practice. See FYN vs PocketGuard.
7. Quicken Simplifi: a spending plan built from income and bills
Simplifi builds a Spending Plan for you: monthly income minus bills and subscriptions, updated as you spend. It forecasts future balances, tracks investments, includes a free VantageScore credit score for US residents, and connects to more than 14,000 institutions on web, iPhone and Android.
Pricing: $6.99/month billed annually ($83.88/year); new members get $3.99/month for the first year. No free plan. Honest limitation: the first-year price renews at the then-current rate, and you are not assigning every dollar. See FYN vs Quicken Simplifi.
