Honeydue vs Monarch Money: Which to Pick
Pick Monarch Money if both people need a login, one shared dashboard, and categories built from spending. You also get the official connector for Claude or ChatGPT. The cost of that is simple: once someone is in the household, you cannot hide an account or a transaction. Pick Honeydue if the point is choosing what a partner sees, including one gift, and you want the app the vendor still describes as free. The privacy settings are why people open Honeydue. The household logins, the categories, and the connector are why they pay for Monarch. FYN (our product) closes this page.
Features and pricing checked . Honeydue figures come from Honeydue's how-it-works page, the App Store and Google Play listings, and the help articles in Sources. Monarch figures come from Monarch's pricing page. FYN's numbers are from our pricing page. If a figure was not on those pages, the cell says Not documented.
This page is the head-to-head: Honeydue or Monarch, for a couple that wants one shared budget. The conversation before either app is how to budget as a couple. The wider list of partner access is best budget apps for couples. If the bill is the only question, that is Monarch Money pricing.
Honeydue vs Monarch Money
| Topic | Honeydue | Monarch Money | FYN (our product)Receipts, Apple Pay, and a household. Bank sync is Pro only. |

Articles dated August 24, 2019. | Nothing is hidden. Shared Views can label whose account or transaction it is. That is a filter on the shared dashboard, not a private account. | Owner, member, or view-only. A control that hides one transaction is not listed on the pricing page. |

The data provider: Not documented. A manual account does not need a bank login. | Plaid, MX, and Finicity. Monarch suggests the provider with the stronger history, and you can switch. Connections can still break. United States and Canada. No free plan. | Pro only, via Plaid, up to 15 accounts. A free account does not sync a bank. |
| Free tier | The 2019 earn-money article says the app is free and that no feature is behind a paywall. An optional tip is $1 to $10. The App Store lists Monthly Tip purchases from $0.99 to $9.99. Play says the app contains ads. A paid feature tier: Not documented. | No free plan. | Free plan. It does not expire and does not ask for a card. It does not sync a bank. |
| Price | No subscription price on the pages checked. The tip amounts above are optional. A trial length: Not documented. The Joint Cash card page is still up. The App Store notes say that debit card program ended in 2023. | No free plan. Core $14.99/month or $99.99/year ($8.33/month). Plus $199.99/year ($16.67/month). US dollars, plus tax. 7-day trial. Line items when the receipt has them. | Photo scans and emailed receipts. 20 a month on Free, 200 on Pro, one combined count. Apple Pay and Google Wallet purchases are logged as you pay. |
| AI and MCP | An official connector for Claude or ChatGPT: Not documented. | Official connector, back on October 21, 2026, on Core and Plus. Read-only unless you allow write. Finicity-linked accounts are left out. | Ask FYN, plus a read-only MCP. Monarch also has a connector. FYN is not the only one. |
| Best for | A couple that wants the free app, separate signups, and a choice to share balances, transactions, or nothing, including hiding one gift. You will live with help articles dated 2019 and three different bank counts. | Separate logins, one dashboard, categories filled from spending, and an official connector. Pay for it if nobody needs a private transaction. Plus if the forecast or the deeper investment tools are the point. | A free start, receipt scans, and Apple Pay and Google Wallet purchases logged as you pay. Household members: 1 on Free, unlimited on Pro. Bank sync is Pro only. This is our product. |
Disclosure: we build FYN. This page is on FYN's site. The FYN column is the option for a free start, receipt scans, and purchases logged as you pay. Scroll the table sideways on a phone. Prices are US list prices. Monarch recommends checking out on the web rather than in the Apple or Google store. Honeydue's optional tip, on the 2019 article, is canceled in the App Store or Google Play account.
Price, free tier, and trial
Honeydue does not publish a Core-style subscription. The earn-money article, dated August 24, 2019, says the app is 100% free, nothing is behind a paywall, and the company sometimes asks for a monthly tip of $1 to $10. That tip works like an app subscription, and you can change or cancel it in the App Store or Google Play account. A trial length is not on that article.
The App Store listing, read the same day, still says the app is free. It lists Monthly Tip in-app purchases at $0.99, $1.99, $2.99, $3.99, $4.99, $5.99, $6.99, $7.99, $8.99, and $9.99. A $10 tip, the top of the 2019 range, was not on that list. The Google Play listing also says the app is free, and it says the app contains ads. The 2019 article does not mention ads. A paid tier that unlocks a feature was not on the pages checked. That part stays Not documented.
Honeydue's Joint Cash page still describes a shared debit card, issued by Sutton Bank and powered by Marqeta, and it calls the account free. The App Store version history says the debit card program closed for new enrollments and was discontinued on September 1, 2023. This comparison is the budgeting app. It is not a reason to open that card. Which of those two pages the product still honors: the store notes say the program ended. The marketing page had not been taken down.
Monarch has no free plan. On October 28, 2026 the pricing page showed Core at $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year, displayed as $8.33 a month when billed yearly. Plus was $199.99 a year, displayed as $16.67 a month. The page's structured data says those prices are in US dollars, plus tax where it applies. Both plan cards say a free 7-day trial, then the plan price, and that a payment method is required. Cancel in settings before the trial ends. The FAQ also offers a no-questions-asked money-back guarantee and does not say how long that window is. The full bill, including the current discount, is on Monarch Money pricing.
On October 28, 2026 the Monarch pricing page showed code WELCOME for 30% off Core for one year. The page says the discount is for new users only, valid for the annual Core plan only, cannot be combined with other offers, and may expire or be deactivated at any time. A footnote on the same page says promo codes apply to annual Core billed directly by Monarch, not through Apple or Google.
FYN is free to start, with no card. The pricing page lists Pro at $9.99 a month, and that is the plan with bank sync. On a monthly bill, Pro is less than Monarch Core's $14.99. Honeydue's pages do not list a subscription to put next to either number. The optional tip, if you pay one, is the amount you pick on the store sheet. FYN's pricing page does not list a yearly price. A free account does not sync a bank.
What a partner can see
This is the split that should decide the page. Honeydue documents a private setting. Monarch documents a shared dashboard with nothing hidden.
Honeydue's visibility article, dated August 24, 2019, says that after a bank connects you pick one of three: share balances and transactions, share balances only, or nothing at all. The same article suggests balances only if the fights are about small purchases. A later article, how to change what a partner can see, also dated August 24, 2019, puts those three choices on the account, under Options, then Partner can see. If the account shares balances and transactions, every transaction is visible by default. You can open one transaction, edit it, and hide that one item. The example in the article is a surprise anniversary gift.
Monarch's household article, updated October 20, 2026, says you cannot hide a bank account or a transaction once someone is invited. Shared Views let you label which accounts and transactions belong to whom, so you can look at one person or both. That is a filter. It is not a private account. The practical difference: Honeydue's documented control is "do not show this." Monarch's documented control is "label this, and both of you can still open it."
The store listings also say you can divvy up expenses and square up. The help articles opened for this page do not walk through that split, so the steps stay Not documented. What is documented is a different split: one purchase assigned to several categories. The category article, dated August 24, 2019, says you open the transaction, tap the category, and choose Assign to multiple categories. That divides a charge across categories. It does not, on that page, divide it between two people.
Sharing with a partner
Honeydue's invite article, dated August 24, 2019, says you open the More menu, tap the partner profile, and enter a name and email. They sign up from that email. If they already have an account, the article says to delete it first. The delete control is on the profile page, behind Edit. That is a separate signup, with a catch for two people who both installed the app before the invite. The articles say "your partner." A third person, a child, or an advisor on the same plan: Not documented.
A joint bank account can show up twice if both people link it. The duplicate-account article, also dated August 24, 2019, says to hide one copy by turning off Enabled on that account. That hide is about a doubled link. It is not the same control as hiding a gift.
Monarch's household article invites one or more people onto a single subscription. Each person has a login and can add accounts. The household shares one dashboard and one budget. Roles are admin (the owner, who manages billing), member, and an optional professional role for an advisor. You cannot invite an email that already has a Monarch account. The Plus article says Plus covers the whole household, the same way Core does. Adding a person does not add a second bill.
If the second person must not see a gift, Honeydue is the product whose help article says that. If the second person must have a login, and you are willing to show every account, Monarch is the product whose help article says that. The roundup of the other apps in that choice is best budget apps for couples. The money conversation before you pick an app is how to budget as a couple.
Budgets and bills
Honeydue's budget article, dated August 24, 2019, says you open a category and tap Add Budget, then set a monthly spending limit. The app notifies you when you go over, and when you hit 75% of the limit. You can change that percentage. The category article from the same day says each account starts with 17 categories, such as Food & Drinks and Salary & Wages. You can edit the name, icon, or color. You and your partner can add custom categories from the Budget tab. The App Store listing says spending is categorized automatically, and that you can add custom categories. The help article is the manual edit. Both were on the pages checked.
The how-it-works page also says the app nudges you, or your partner, when a bill is due. A chat on a transaction is on that same page: a thumbs-up, or a question about the charge. A count of emojis is on the store listings and the two stores do not use the same number, so this page does not repeat either count.
Monarch's budget help, updated October 22, 2026, offers two types. Flex budgeting is the default: one flexible bucket, plus fixed and non-monthly groups. Category budgeting assigns an amount to each category. The first budget is filled from the average of the last six months, and you can recalculate that later. The budget is monthly cash flow: expected income, then expenses and savings. Transactions are categorized for you, and you can move money between categories when one runs over. In flex, that move is to or from the flexible bucket as a whole. About 60 categories sit in groups, under Income, Expenses, and Transfers.
So the practical difference is who sets the number, and whether a partner can be left out of a line. Honeydue waits for you to put a monthly limit on a category, then warns you at the percentage you chose. Monarch starts from six months of averages and lets you stay at the flex number or budget category by category. Neither page says the app will decline a card when the limit is hit.
Bank sync
Neither company publishes a single reliability score, so this post does not crown a winner. What they document is who can connect, and Honeydue's own pages do not agree with each other.
The how-it-works page says the app supports bank accounts, loans, and investments, at over 20,000 financial institutions across 5 countries. It does not name the five countries. It does not name the data provider. Not documented. The App Store listing says the app supports most banks in the US. The Google Play listing says support for over 5,000 banks. A person who only opens one of those three pages gets a different count. This post will not pick which sentence is the live coverage.
The update article, dated August 24, 2019, says bank data is refreshed several times a day, and that the pace varies by bank. Some transactions show up the same day. Others take a day or two. If a day passes and the transactions are still missing, the article says to email [email protected]. The manual-account article from the same day says you can add an account without a bank login and type the transactions yourself. The cash article is the same path, with the account type set to Cash.
Loans are a special case. The loans article, dated August 24, 2019, says Honeydue does not subtract loans or mortgages from the total it shows. The reason on the page is that a new mortgage would show a negative total for years, and the app would rather treat the loan as a bill. If you opened Honeydue to see assets minus debts, that article says the total is not that number.
Monarch's data-provider article, June 9, 2026, names three providers: Plaid, MX, and Finicity. Monarch suggests the provider with the stronger history for that institution, and you can switch. The same article says connections can still break, that some institutions are hard to keep synced, and that on an OAuth connection the bank login stays at the bank. The download page limits the product to the United States and Canada. There is no free plan, so the feed sits on Core or Plus.
FYN's bank connection is Plaid, up to 15 accounts, and it is on Pro only. A free account does not sync a bank.
Mobile
The App Store page says Honeydue is only for iPhone, requires iOS 16 or later, and also lists Apple Vision. A native iPad app was not on that compatibility list. Not documented. The Google Play listing is Android. The page said the app was updated on June 18, 2026. A web app was not on the how-it-works page, which calls Honeydue a free mobile app. Not documented.
Monarch's download page lists web, iPhone, iPad, and Android, in the United States and Canada. The Plus article says Plus features are on desktop web, with only parts of business tracking on mobile. The same download page also lists the connector.
Receipts
Monarch's receipt help, updated October 28, 2026, lets you scan or upload a receipt, or forward the email to [email protected]. It reads merchant, amount, and date, and line items when the receipt has them. It can split one receipt across categories. Scanning is documented on the phone, and upload is documented on the web. Those receipts sit inside the paid subscription. There is no free plan to put them on.
A product page or help article that says Honeydue reads a receipt photo, stores a receipt image, or pulls line items was not on the pages checked. That cell stays Not documented. What is documented is a bank transaction, a manual transaction, and a category you assign.
AI and MCP
Monarch's blog post dated October 21, 2026 says the connector is back after a pause. The help article, updated October 22, 2026, is on Core and Plus. Official clients are Claude, ChatGPT on a paid web plan, Cursor, and Gemini CLI. Read-only is the default. Write access is granted only if the tool asks and you approve. You do not share your Monarch password with the tool. Accounts linked through Finicity are left out, which can include some Fidelity brokerage accounts. Plus members get more weekly usage than Core. The server URL on the help page is https://api.monarch.com/mcp.
An official Honeydue connector for Claude, ChatGPT, or another outside assistant was not on the Honeydue pages checked, so that cell stays Not documented.
The practical split: Honeydue's documented conversation is the in-app chat about a transaction. Monarch's documented assistant path is the outside connector, and that connector can write if you allow it.
Who should pick Monarch, and who should pick Honeydue
Pick Monarch if you want a separate login for more than a shared password, categories filled from the last six months, receipt line items, net worth on Core, or an official connector for Claude or ChatGPT. Core is the right tier for cash flow, a budget seeded from recent spending, goals, net worth, receipts, and a household where nobody hides an account. Pay for Plus only if you want forecasting or the deeper investment tools, and plan to use them on the desktop site. The trial is a week, and the plan card says a payment method is required, so decide before it rolls into $99.99 or $14.99. Whether that price is worth the dashboard is on Is Monarch Money worth it?. The Monarch pages checked do not show a free plan, and they do not show a way to hide one gift.
Pick Honeydue if the couple's actual fight is "do not show me that charge," and a free app is the budget. You can share balances and transactions, balances only, or nothing, and you can hide one transaction. The partner gets their own signup. The limits are the ones on Honeydue's own pages: the help center dates on this comparison are August 24, 2019, the three bank-count pages do not agree, the data provider is not named, loans are not subtracted from the total, a partner who already signed up has to delete that account, a bill-split walkthrough was not in the help center, and an official outside connector was not on the pages checked. Read the tip pages together. One says $1 to $10. The App Store list that day stopped at $9.99. The Play listing says the app contains ads.
If neither of these two fits, the wider list is Monarch Money alternatives. The narrower grid, written as FYN next to Monarch, is FYN vs Monarch.
Failure modes
Honeydue fails when you needed a help article written after 2019. The sharing, budget, bank, and price articles cited here are all dated August 24, 2019. The stores have shipped since then, including a Play update on June 18, 2026, but the how-to pages have not moved with them. It fails if you needed one bank count: 20,000 institutions in 5 countries, most US banks, and over 5,000 banks are three different sentences. It fails if you needed the name of the data provider, a web app, an iPad app, a receipt photo, or a connector for Claude or ChatGPT. Those were not on the pages checked. It fails if the job was "square up this dinner," because the stores say you can divvy expenses and the help center does not show the steps. It fails if a third person must be on the plan. The documented invite is a partner. It fails if you wanted loans subtracted from the total. And it fails if you treated the Joint Cash page as a current debit card. The App Store notes say that program ended on September 1, 2023.
Monarch fails when you wanted a free month to decide, or a gift the other person cannot open. There is no free plan. The trial is 7 days, a payment method is required, and then Core is $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year. You cannot hide an account from someone you invited. Flex can look accurate while spending does not change, because the app does not make you set a limit before you spend. Connections can still break, which Monarch's own article says. Plus tools are on the desktop site, so a forecast you expected on the phone is the wrong tier and the wrong screen. Finicity-linked accounts are left out of the connector, so an assistant can miss a brokerage. And the WELCOME code is annual Core only, for new users, billed by Monarch rather than by Apple or Google, and the page says it can expire.
Where FYN fits
FYN is our product, and it is last because a couple can share one household on a plan you can name. Pro is $9.99 a month, with unlimited household members. Everyone shares the plan's limits. A shared member can be an owner, a member, or view-only. The free plan does not expire and does not ask for a card. It includes 1 household member. The limits below are the ones on the pricing page.
A photo of the receipt and an emailed receipt share one monthly count: 20 a month on Free, 200 a month on Pro. Apple Pay and Google Wallet purchases are logged as you pay, on Free and on Pro. Ask FYN is 20 questions a month on Free and 500 on Pro. The same page lists read-only MCP calls so assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT can read your FYN data. They do not get a bank password. The free plan includes 500 of those calls a day, and Pro includes 10,000. Monarch also publishes a connector, on Core and Plus, read-only unless you allow write. FYN is not the only one.
Bank sync is Pro only, via Plaid, up to 15 accounts. A free account does not sync a bank. The pricing page lists an autopilot budget on Free and Pro. The household row is: 1 on Free, unlimited on Pro. FYN is free to start.
FAQ
Is Honeydue cheaper than Monarch Money?
On the pages checked October 28, 2026, Honeydue does not publish a subscription price. The App Store listing that day showed the app as free, with Monthly Tip in-app purchases at $0.99, $1.99, $2.99, $3.99, $4.99, $5.99, $6.99, $7.99, $8.99, and $9.99. A $10 tip was not on that list. The Google Play listing says the app contains ads. Monarch has no free plan. Core is $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year, shown as $8.33 a month when billed yearly. Plus is $199.99 a year, shown as $16.67 a month. Monarch's pricing data says those prices are in US dollars, plus tax where it applies. FYN is free to start. FYN Pro, the plan with bank sync, is $9.99 a month.
Does Honeydue have a free plan? Does Monarch?
Honeydue's earn-money article says the app is 100% free and that no feature is behind a paywall. The App Store and Google Play listings also say the app is free. A numbered trial, and a paid tier that unlocks a feature, were not on the pages checked. The optional tip is not required by that article. Monarch's pricing page lists Core and Plus. It does not list a free plan. The plan cards say a 7-day trial, then the plan price, and that a payment method is required. Cancel in settings before the trial ends. The FAQ also offers a no-questions-asked money-back guarantee and does not say how long that window lasts. FYN has a free plan that does not expire and does not ask for a card. Bank sync is not on it.
Which is better for couples, Honeydue or Monarch Money?
Honeydue, if each person must choose what the other sees. The visibility articles, dated August 24, 2019, offer balances and transactions, balances only, or nothing, and you can hide one transaction. The invite is a separate signup by email. If that person already has a Honeydue account, the invite article says to delete it first. A household larger than a partner: Not documented. Monarch, if each person needs a login on one subscription and you accept that nothing is hidden. The household help, updated October 20, 2026, lets you invite one or more people. Everyone sees the same dashboard and the same budget. You cannot hide a bank account or a transaction. Shared Views can label whose account or transaction it is. That is a filter, not a private account. The pricing page lists 1 household member on Free and unlimited household members on Pro. Everyone shares the plan's limits. A shared member can be an owner, a member, or view-only.
Can I hide a purchase from my partner in Honeydue or in Monarch?
Honeydue's article on what a partner can see, dated August 24, 2019, says you can hide one transaction, such as a gift, after the account is set to share balances and transactions. You can also set the whole account to balances only, or to nothing. Monarch's household article, updated October 20, 2026, says you cannot hide a bank account or a transaction once someone is in the household. A per-transaction hide on FYN's pricing page: not listed there.
Do Honeydue and Monarch Money connect to Claude or ChatGPT?
Monarch does. Its blog dated October 21, 2026 says the connector is back after a pause. The help article, updated October 22, 2026, is on Core and Plus for Claude, ChatGPT on a paid web plan, Cursor, and Gemini CLI. It is read-only unless you allow write, and Finicity-linked accounts are left out. An official Honeydue connector for Claude or ChatGPT was not on the product or help pages checked. FYN's pricing page lists Ask FYN (20 questions a month on Free, 500 on Pro) and read-only agent calls for Claude and ChatGPT (500 a day on Free, 10,000 a day on Pro). Monarch also publishes a connector. FYN is not the only one.
Does Honeydue sync a bank, and which banks?
The how-it-works page says Honeydue supports over 20,000 financial institutions across 5 countries, including bank accounts, loans, and investments. It does not name the five countries, and it does not name the data provider. The App Store listing says the app supports most banks in the US. The Google Play listing says over 5,000 banks. Those three pages do not agree, so this answer does not pick one count. The update article, dated August 24, 2019, says bank data is refreshed several times a day, and that some banks show a purchase the same day while others take a day or two. You can also add an account by hand, without a bank login. Monarch's sync is on the paid plan, because there is no free plan. Providers named in Monarch's data-provider article are Plaid, MX, and Finicity, in the United States and Canada. FYN's free plan does not sync a bank. Bank sync is Pro only.
